Murugiah left in limbo by arbitrator

2010/01/26

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Arbitral Tribunal Establishment (Mate) had purportedly declared him the rightful president of the People's Progressive Party but the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration (KLRCA) does not recognise Mate, and sacked PPP member Senator Datuk T. Murugiah is now in a quandary.

KLRCA director Datuk Noorashikin Abdul Rahim said KLRCA was the only arbitration centre in Malaysia and that arbitration was only a settlement for commercial disputes and not for political bodies.

She, however, declined further comments on the legality of Mate.

"Some of the salient features of arbitration is that both parties must have written agreements to refer to arbitration, both parties must agree who the arbitrator is and all arbitration matters are confidential and decisions cannot be reported," she said.

Officially, as per the Registrar of Societies endorsement, Datuk M. Kayveas is the legitimate president.

On Jan 10, Murugiah had said he would not be intimidated by attempts by Kayveas' supporters to overthrow him.

"I am not afraid of anybody who wants to make a police report. Let them make as many police reports, I do not care because Mate had declared that I am the rightful PPP president."
